Cancer Treatment

What types of treatment are available for cancer patients? In cancer treatment, surgery is generally used only if it can cure the cancer. It is most useful in cancers that have not spread. However, if the cancer has spread to only one area or is small, then it may be possible to remove it completely with Surgery.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill the cancer cells. For cancer that has not spread much, radiation therapy can sometimes cure the cancer. With cancer that is advanced the radiation is often used to shrink the tumors or reduce the pain.

Hormone therapy: Estrogen is a hormone that is secreted by a woman's ovaries. Androgens (such as testosterone) are hormones that are produced by the male's testicles. These hormones can promote the growth of many cancers. In these instances it is often beneficial to give the cancer patient drugs that will block the action of the hormones.

What is Cancer?
Informational Directory of Cancer Subjects
Simply speaking, cancer is an invasive growth or tumor with a tendency to metastasize, or spread, to other sites. In Cancer, cells grow out of control and can then invade nearby tissues or spread throughout the body. Large clumps of this abnormal tissue are what make up tumors. Dangerous Malignant Tumors can spread and threaten someone's life, while Benign (non-cancerous) Tumors will not. It can months or even years for a tumor to get large enough to notice in an area such as the breast.

Informational Site of Cancer SubjectsIn a normal healthy body the tissue cells have a certain life expectancy. The cells will grow, divide, and die after a period of time. The dead cells are replaced by new healthy cells. The cell of an adult will usually divide only to replace the old worn out cells or to repair damaged cells. Cancer cells are different. They will continue to grow and divide, outliving normal cells.

Cancer cells will often travel to other parts of the body where they begin to divide, grow, and replace normal tissue cells. This is called metastasis. Cancer travels to the different body areas through the bloodstream or lymph vessels.

Cancer cells develop when a person's DNA becomes damaged. It is normal for DNA to become damaged, but most of the time the damaged DNA is easily repairable by the body. In cancer cells however, the damaged DNA is not repaired, but remains damaged. When people inherit cancer it is through this damaged DNA. Many cancers are not inherited, but are caused when a person’s DNA becomes damaged by exposure to a substance in the environment, such as the smoke from cigarettes.

Cancer usually forms as a tumor. A tumor is a collection, or group of abnormal cells. One common cancer that does not form tumors is leukemia. Leukemia cancer cells involve the blood and blood-forming organs (such as bone marrow), and circulate through other tissues where they grow.

Not all tumors are cancerous. Benign (noncancerous) tumors do not spread to other parts of the body and are rarely life-threatening.

Not all cancers behave alike. Breast cancer cells will behave differently than pancreatic cancer cells. The cells will grow and divide at different rates and will respond, or not respond, to different treatments. When a person gets cancer they will need treatment that is for their particular type of cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart attacks. 50% of all men and 33% of all women in the United States will likely develop cancer during their lifetime. The risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by following some healthy habits such as not smoking, or eating a healthy diet including lots of vegetables and fruits. Cancer spreads. The sooner it is discovered and the sooner the treatment begins, the better chance of survival.

  Cancer Prevention

Is it possible to prevent cancer? You can certainly reduce your odds of getting cancer if you follow a few rules. The first rule is "Don't Smoke." Lung cancer is very common and smoking increases your risk.

Rule number two, don't get too much sun. A sunburn will eventually fade away, but sun damage to deeper layers of skin remains and can eventually cause skin cancer.

Rule number three: Eat right (lots of fruits and vegetables, not too much meat) and exercise. Gaining too much weight may also increase the risk of cancer.

Increasing the strength of your immune system may be of help in preventing cancer. Some research has shown that chiropractic adjustments of the upper cervical spine may increase immune system strength.
